Artist becomes poster art for helmet safety
There aren’t many items in an artist’s studio that surprise us. But roller blades were new to me. Anchorage artist Margret Hugi-Lewis uses them to glide from one project area to another, apparently. But it may not be the safest way to get around, as she noted on her Facebook page last month.

Lawrence Huster
Lawrence Walter Huster, 88, of Hemet, died June 28, 2011, at Integrated Care Communities Assisted Living in Moreno Valley. Services were June 30 at Miller-Jones Mortuary in Hemet. Interment is private at Riverside National Cemetery.

Harry and the Homeless

In Anchorage there is a park system that runs through much of the city, it’s called Campbell Creek. At one point along the creek, in a kind of "low rent" area, is a platform for viewing the creek. Year round local homeless people gather on this platform and, ah, socialize.

Mavs set for new league while some are upset
Now it’s official. In a joint press release sent at noon Saturday, UNO and five other schools confirmed that they intend to break away from their current conferences and form a new hockey league that will hit the ice in 2013-14.

Gypsy Underground dancers performing IMG_9726a

Gypsy Underground is the collective name of various belly dance groups in the Anchorage area. They perform at the annual Forest Fair in Girdwood, Alaska, about 30 miles south of Anchorage. This show is one of the highlights of the Fair. This year the show was incredible with lovely graceful dancers, colorful and dazzling outfits, and even good weather for a change.

NASA’s ICESCAPE mission to sampled the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the ocean and sea ice. Impacts of Climate change on the Eco-Systems and Chemistry of the Arctic Pacific Environment (ICESCAPE) is a multi-year NASA shipborne project.
